What is euthanasia?

The word euthanasia means "good death", the meaning of the word is exactly why the procedure is performed. Euthanasia is a life-ending procedure that results in the humane death of an animal, with the assistance of a veterinarian to ensure a rapid and pain-free experience.

How should I prepare for the visit?

There are no preparations needed other than whatever you feel would make you and your animal as comfortable as possible. Your and your pet can be anywhere you choose. They can be on their bed, their favorite blanket, the couch, or on your lap. For our large animal patients, they too, can be in any location that makes them most comfortable, whether that is in a barn, stall, field or any other location that you desire.

What is the euthanasia process?

When you are prepared for euthanasia, Dr. Lauren will come to your home or farm at a predetermined time that works best for you and your family. Dr. Lauren will discuss the process with you and complete paperwork. She will then evaluate the patient and make any necessary preparations, such as shaving, to allow for access to a vein, or placing an intravenous catheter. Once everyone is prepared, Dr. Lauren will administer sedative to the patient, which also provides pain-relief for the animal. Family, friends and companions are then asked to say their final words before Dr. Lauren administers a dose of euthanasia solution, that will result in a humane death.

Do I need to be present for the procedure?

Family, friends and companions (furry or otherwise), are always encouraged to be present for all parts of the procedure, however, you do not need to be present, if you do not wish to be.

What is the cost for euthanasia and after-care?

The cost for euthanasia and after-care depend on the location, species and services desired. The further the distance Dr. Lauren travels, the greater the cost, based on mileage from Danville, Iowa. Species also matters, as the larger the animal, the larger the volume of drugs required to complete the euthanasia. After-care is also variable, depending on what is desired, from cremation to removal, the costs range greatly. Call, (319) 768-6889 or e-mail us, info@crossingsvet.com for a cost estimate.
